May 30th – The Situation

We are moving, or more accurately, are in the process of moving. Currently, our household is stuck in the precarious limbo between a livable home and a fully packed, barren rental. I am no stranger to the process of moving. In my twelve years, I have moved a total of seven times. The familiarity of all my belongings being segregated and packed into an army of Home Depot boxes is all too familiar. I thought that this move would be similar to my past experiences, barely out of the mundane, but boy was I wrong.

It was all going normally. From the bustling Atlanta, GA we were moving back down south to the college town of Athens, home town of the UGA Bulldogs. This town was a move back to the familiar, as I had spent just over eight years of my life in this quiet town. Other than the occasional home football game, things stayed pretty quiet. I digress.
The house we were planning to stay in had housed a group of college roommates that had recently graduated from their masters. The clothes strewn everywhere should have been an immediate red flag, but we proceeded, as on paper, this house trumped all the other candidates we had put together, both in size and price. After finalizing the lease, and ensuring that a deep carpet clean would be conducted, we continued packing to our new deadline date.
As the bittersweet Sunday grew closer, we said our final goodbyes to the friends that we had made. I dropped off all my school supplies. That Friday, we packed all the boxes we had arranged into a van. My parents headed down to the house to start the unpacking. We were expecting them to come back tired, but happy that we had finally initiated the move. It was a surprise when we received a call midway through their absence.
The pet odor was unbearable. The home had been listed as a pet-free household, but my mother said that she was almost gagging at the unbearable stench. The house would not do. My brother has a severe asthma tendency. His airway would easily seize with the smells and microfibers floating in the air. It simply was not an option to continue with this house. So we are stuck.
Our current lease ends on Monday. There are no houses available on such short notice. The only option we have is an Air B&B, as hotels are simply not possible with the current COVID Pandemic. It will be interesting to see how we will move on with this current situation. I will keep updating this blog on any developments, or anything interesting that happens in this situation. If you guys have any suggestions to any Air B&Bs that would be available in Athens, Georgia, I would really appreciate it. Other than that, I want to document this experience, just for memory sake.
